(Richmond, VA 9-30-23) The University of Richmond lost to the Hampton Pirates 31-14 for the 1st time in program history. Prior to Saturday’s match-up, the Spiders won all 4 matchups over the Pirates outscoring them 162-65. Spiders came into this matchup with a clutch win on the road 20-19 over Stony Brook, while the Pirates were fresh off an early bye week.

The Spiders and the Pirates started their opening drives in a Punt. The Pirate's 1st scoring drive (10 plays 73 Yards) came in the 1st quarter (2:24 left) as Quarterback Chris Zellous ran for 7 yards to put the Pirates on the board 7-0. The Pirates continued their dominance in the 2nd quarter as Pirates running back Tymere Robinson ran in a 2-yard touchdown to give the Pirates a 14-0 lead. Before the half Pirates kicker Brian Csehoski kicked a 24-yard FG to put Hampton up 17-0.

The Pirates dominated the first half as the Pirates amassed 292 total yards compared to the Spiders who had 53 yards. In the 3rd quarter the Spiders cut into the Pirates lead as Spiders True Freshman Quarterback Camden Coleman connected with Tight End Brooks Heagarty for a 7-yard TD (17-7 Hampton). The Pirates struck back as Quarterback Chris Zellous connected with Dorrian Moultrie for a 5-yard TD pass to give the Pirates a 24-7 lead with 9:27 remaining in the 4th Quarter. In the following possession, Spiders Quarterback Camden Coleman connected with Wide receiver Nick DeGennaro on a 25-yard pass to lower the lead to 10 (24-14). All hope of a Spider comeback came crashing down as Chris Zellous ran for an 8-yard touchdown to give the Pirates a 31-14 lead with 5:00 left in the game, which the lead stood until the end.

The University of Richmond got their 1st victory of 2023 with a convincing 38-6 victory over Delaware State. The University of Richmond returned home after last week’s loss to Michigan State in Lasing to face off with the Delaware State Hornets in their final non-conference game of the regular season. Both teams entered the contest with a 0-2 record. This was the first matchup between these two schools.

The Spiders opened the game on an 18-yard punt return from Nathan Wilson. The Spiders opening drive (7 plays for 30 yards) led to a 40-yard field goal by Andrew Lopez. The Hornets' opening drive was lackluster as they punted. The Hornets struck back on their 2nd possession as they went on a 15-play drive for 80 yards that led to a 36-yard field goal by Jonathan Cardoza-Chicas.

Richmond responded with a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Milan Howard to give the Spiders a 10-3 lead with 8:21 left in the 2nd quarter. Running back Savon Smith ran for a 2-yard touchdown to give the Spiders a 17-3 lead with 1:35 left before halftime. The Spiders punched in another score, but this time through the air as Quarterback Kyle Wickersham connected with Jerry Garcia Jr. on a 56-yard play that gave the Spiders a 24-3 lead at Halftime.

The Spiders continued their dominance defensively as they shut down Delaware State in their opening drive of the 2nd half. Jonathan Cardoza-Chicas kicked a 23-yard field goal to make the Score 24-6 with 2:02 left in the 3rd quarter. Kyle Wickersham connected with Nick DeGennaro for 44 yards to extend the Spiders lead to 25 in the 4th quarter. Hornets’ wide receiver NyGhee Lolley inadvertently threw the ball to Richmond’s Linebacker Wayne Galloway who intercepted the ball and took it to the house to give the Spiders a 38-6 lead that held up to the final whistle.

Richmond ends their non-conference schedule in the win column. The Spiders will begin their CAA conference schedule on the road next week as they face Stony Brook, they will return home on September 30th as they will face Hampton.

1st Down: Who won the week

The Dallas Cowboys by far had the biggest win of week 1 as they destroyed the New York Giants 40-0. The Cowboys scored on all three phases( Special Teams, Defense & Offense ). The domination started in special teams as Noah Igbinoghene recovered a block field goal attempt & ran 58 yards to put the Cowboys on the scoreboard. DaRon Bland intercepted Daniel Jones for a 22-yard Pick 6. Tony Pollard and Kavontae Turpin combined for 3 rushing touchdowns to give the Cowboys their biggest shutout victory in franchise history.

(Honorable Mention)

SanFranciso 49ers coming East to defeat the Steelers 30-7. Brock Purdy (19-29, 220 Yards, 2TDS continues his dominance & is becoming Mr. Revelent instead of Mr. Irreventent (Nickname given to the last player drafted, Purdy was the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft).

2nd Down: Biggest Takeaway from Week 1

I'm convinced the Giants and the Jets are cursed. The Giants opened Met Life stadium in primetime on Sunday night and got crushed 40-0 by their NFC East Rival Dallas Cowboys. Fast forward to Monday, the Jets hosted the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football & in the 1st quarter newly acquired Aaron Rodgers went down with an apparent ankle issue requiring him to wear a walking boot and ruled out for the game. Despite the despair, these two games created 2 pictures that will turn into Memes for sure:

3rd Down: Who gets the Game Ball for Week 1?

Tua Tagovailoa 28/45 466 Yards 3TDs

4th Down: Week 2 matchup to watch:

The matchup to watch is the Jacksonville Jaguars hosting the Super Bowl Champs Kansas City Chiefs. This game is a rematch of last year's divisional round where the Chiefs won 27-20. Chiefs travel to Jacksonville after their opening game loss to the Detroit Lions. The Jaguars return home from a 31-21 win over the Colts on Sunday. Will the Chiefs get their 1st win or will they fall to 0-2?

EXTRA POINT: Top 5 Teams heading into Week 2

2) Dallas Cowboys 1-0

3) Philadelphia Eagles 1-0

4) Cleveland Browns 1-0

5) Miami Dolphins 1-0
